CFS State of the Science Meeting
The CFS State of the Science Meeting was held in Washington, DC in October. If you missed it, you can still get in on the information:
Chinese Energetic Medicine Technique
River, who has been a sufi since 1972, has set up a website to teach people a Chinese energetic medicine technique call Chi Kung. He claims many people with chronic illnesses have benefited greatly from this meditative exercise that reduces poins and speeds the healing process. It involves moving your awareness through your body in set patterns for 27 minutes twice a day. Those interested in Eastern Medicine and/or meditation may want to check out his website. Complete instructions are available on the site at no charge. He hopes to establish an online group of people practicing this technique to share experiences and encourage one another. Educate Your Doctor About FMS
A new article in the October issue of American Family Physician goes a long way in helping dispel the myths about FMS in language that your physician will find credible. Print out the article and take it to your doctor. CFS, Hepatitis C or Pesticide Poisoning?
The Guardian, a UK newspaper, ran an article on July 25th about Hepititis C. One study found that one person in 100 has Hepititis C, most are undiagnosed, and the symptoms are very similiar to CFIDS/ME. The author states "up to 40% of those diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome could actually have Hepatitis C." Read the full story online.. Spiritual Journey Meetings Suspended
Despite a great deal of interest, attendance has been minimal at our spiritual journey meetings. Like so many things, people want and intend to come, but the energy is just not there. And many members use what energy they do have to participate in their own faith communities or practices, which is as it should be. We will try to have at least one regular meeting each year related to spirituality and chronic illness, as we have done in the past. If someone else wishes to try facilitating these monthly meetings, please contact Carol. Nominations Open for Board of Directors
In January of 2001 the Board of Directors will hold its annual meeting to review the financial report for 2000, approve the budget for 2001, conduct any new business, and elect new Board Members. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else (with their permission), contact one of the directors listed here. We welcome and encourage those with new ideas and an interest in becoming involved to step forward. All organizations need infusion of "new blood" to stay healthy!
The Board of Directors began as an informal Advisory Board in 1998. It became the Board of Directors when we incorporated, which was part of the process of becoming a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. Our by-laws call for at least three, but no more than seven directors.
Our leader, Carol Sieverling, consults the Board frequently ã usually when issues arise that are not covered by current policy or involve expenditures that are not in the budget. In The Media
"Focus on the Family" has scheduled a series on CFS for October 16, 17 and 18. The Christiam Radio Show featuring Dr. James Dobson airs each day at 10 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. on KCBI, 90.0FM
The National Public Radio interviewed award winning Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett on the program "Fresh Air". Jarrett spoke about his struggle with CFIDS, which left him unable to perform, play or even listen to music for two years. He can now maintain a limited performing schedule. A transcript can be found at http://www.immunesupport.com/ (Enter "Jarrett" in the search window.)
The New York Times and the Washington Post have both published recent articles on FMS. The Post article can be viewed at http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38884-2000Jul25.html. The Times article is at http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/science/health/080100hth-brody.html. You have to register at the site but it is free. Thanks to Co-Cure for this info.
