Why May 12? Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was born on May 12th. Few people know that she spent the last half of her life confined to her home and often bedridden, suffering from an illness similar to what we now call CFIDS.Despite the strenuous objections of her wealthy family, she pursued a career in nursing. In 1854, Nightingale recruited a group of nurses and went to Turkey to help care for the soldiers wounded in the Crimean War. While visiting the front lines, she became ill and never recovered. Although an invalid for the rest of her life, Nightingale continued to have tremendous influence on the standards of nursing care and training through correspondence. She helped establish the first Visiting Nurse Association and a school that became a model for the training of nurses. She was the first woman to receive the British Order of Merit. She died in 1910 at the age of ninety, and continues to be remembered as the lady with the lamp due to the late hours that she worked tending to the sick and wounded. Thanks to RESCIND for this info.
