Local Media CoverageOn the local front, Harris Methodist Hospital System published a piece about our support group in its fall publication of "Regarding Women." Again, we are grateful to Cindy Wright, the Director of Community Relations at Harris Methodist HEB, for arranging the article.
1999 National Media CoverageOn April 11 VH-1 (cable TV) aired a 90-minute documentary on Cher. It briefly mentioned her two years of being bed-ridden with CFS. On April 16 "Larry King Live" on CNN featured Cher. In response to a caller, Cher explained that she struggled for two years with unsympathetic doctors, but got better after receiving homeopathic treatments and vitamins and minerals from a holistic doctor. Larry King noted that some believe the illness is imagined, and Cher responded, "I know that I wasn't talking myself into it." On May 28 the Washington Post did a story on the Inspector GeneralÌs report detailing the CDC's misuse of millions of CFS research funds, and their ensuing lies to Congress. The Fox Network affiliate in Washington, DC taped interviews with Dr. William Reeves (the CDC whistle-blower), Rep. John Porter (strong CFIDS supporter), and CFIDS patient Terry Hedrick. The story was fed to all local Fox affiliates and aired on many of them on May 26 or shortly thereafter.Anyone know if it aired here? The Australian did an interesting and realistic story about the wife of Tasmanian Premier Jim Bacon, Honey Bacon, who has struggled with CFS for the past ten years. The MetroWest Daily News in Framingham, Mass., WESH-TV in Central Florida, and the magazine Advance Laboratory all carried positive stories about CFIDS this spring.
National Media CoverageIn October the Boston Globe ran three excellent articles on the higher CDC prevalence figures and the CDC misuse of CFS research funds. On December 18th, the Globe also ran a fabulous editorial about the seriousness of CFIDS and the need for a new name. On December 28th the Wall Street Journal ran a very disturbing piece entitled "Chronic Disability Payments" which upset and indeed enraged many in the CFIDS community. To read the article, find out where and how to respond to it check out at www.cfids.org on the web. Though I learned about it after the fact and have not heard any feedback, the Leeza show devoted almost an entire episode to FM. "Dear Abby" article dealt with CFIDS and there were articles mentioning CFS/FMS were featured in Redbook and Woman's Day. The Good Morning America show talked about FMS and the cognitive abnormalities that accompany it. Quite a month for coverage!
