MAY 12 CFS/FM RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY TEXAS LEGISLATURE

On April 27 the resolution introduced by Representative Todd Smith of Bedford, declaring May 12 to be CFS/FM Awareness Day, was adopted. Fifteen people from Austin, Bryan, College Station, San Antonio and DFW attended the exciting event. Many thanks to Harris Methodist Hospital HEB for providing the airfare and hotel for Carol Sieverling, group leader, and Cindy Wright, Community Relations Manager for Harris Methodist Hospital HEB.

MAY 12 CFS/FM RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY TEXAS LEGISLATURE

In cooperation with two local FM groups, we accomplished a great deal this year. The cities of Irving, Fort Worth, Arlington and Grand Prairie issued proclamations declaring May 12 to be Awareness Day, and the presentations appeared on local cable TV stations in the first three cities. Between fifteen and twenty library displays were put up, and very successful information displays took place at hospitals in Bedford, Fort Worth and Grand Prairie. The Arlington paper carried an FM/CFS story, one of the Spanish TV stations interviewed a member in her home, and the Irving Cable TV station covered the Cheney seminar.

    Information from Carol Sieverling

Our support group has just ordered 250 copies of the new CDC booklet on CFS and 250 copies of the NIH's booklet "CFS for Physicians". We learned from the CFIDS Association that individuals can order 200 to 300 copies at no charge.

Other groups might also find it helpful to know that last year the hospitals let us set up our tables at the entrance to their cafeterias from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's a great place to be. Last year a great many doctors, nurses, and visitors came right by and stopped to look at our information on their way to and from lunch. It was a much better use of our time and energy than the booths at the mall. We gave out so much more information, and most of it was to medical professionals.

The new 20-page CFS booklet can be ordered from the CDC by calling (404) 639-1338. Any individual can order several hundred copies. (CDC material can be read here.

On the NIH order form you will need to place the order as a "professional" (support group leader, material to be distributed via hospital displays). Information on fibromyalgia can be here. While this material may not be our favorite information source on CFIDS, it carries great credibility with the medical community, and if nothing else establishes that this is a real illness taken seriously by government health agencies. That's a big step for many doctors.

We will of course be including other information. We'll probably use our award gift certicicate to buy lots of copies of the medical article "CFS and Depression: Biological Differentiation and Treatment" by Jorge and Goodnick published in Psychiatric Annals in May 1997. ($2.50 from the CFIDS Association).

We are also typing up a list of the many medical articles on CFS that have been published in peer-reviewed journals that we can include in the info packet for medical professionals. The amount of published research on CFIDS alone will impress many uninformed doctors, and they can then access any articles they are interested in.
