CDC Fiscal Misconduct and Coverup

If you saw the cover of the most recent "CFIDS Chronicle", you are aware that Dr. William Reeves of the CDC invoked the Whistleblower's Act on July 22 and charged the CDC with diverting 2.6 million dollars of CFIDS research funds into other programs and lying to Congress about it. Reeves, who oversees CFIDS research, claims that more than 5 million has been diverted since 1995.

On August 7th, the CDC canceled its study of CFIDS in children and adolescents, due to "lack of funds". This is absolutely outrageous and inexcusable! The CFIDS Association of America has suspected this mismanagement of funds for more than six years and has pressed hard for an accounting of research spending. In its dealings with the CDC, the Association more often than not viewed Dr. Reeves as part of the problem, rather than part of the solution.

However, when 18 months of trying to work quietly within the system to correct matters led nowhere. Dr. Reeves contacted Kim Kenney, the CFIDS Association's Executive Director, and asked for her assistance in taking his documentation to the right people in government. Association staff helped him prepare for the meetings and accompanied him to the meetings.

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada has requested a comprehensive GAO audit into the CDC's research spending. The Department of Health and Human Services is currently conducting an audit of all costs reported as devoted to the CFS program from Fiscal Year 1995 to the present.

When the report is complete you will also be able to obtain a copy by calling the Inspector General's Office of Public Affairs report line at 202-619-1142.
