The CFS/FM Support Group of DFW, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, exists to provide education and support for those living with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS); fibromyalgia (FM) and other related illnesses.

The group formed in 1988 under the leadership of Dave Lovelace. In keeping with the understanding of the time, it was called the Chronic Epstein-Barr Support Group. It evolved into the Ft. Worth and Mid-Cities CFIDS Support Group, led by Bob and Jennifer Fix. In 1998, Carol Sieverling assumed leadership of the group and the name was changed to reflect the fact that a great many of our members have fibromyalgia syndrome and come from all over the metroplex. Carvi Shamsid-Deen became support group leader in 2005.

The clinical overlap between CFIDS and FM is so great that a patient's diagnosis may depend on what type of doctor you see and how you describe your symptoms on that particular day. Many have only FM and some have only CFIDS; however, some research shows that a majority of chronic fatigue syndrome patients also develop fibromyalgia.

Both syndromes share similar profiles, including but not limited to pain and fatigue, poor sleep, cognitive difficulties, endocrine abnormalities, and abnormal blood flow in and to the brain. Other chronic conditions shared by some members of our group include multiple chemical sensitivities, restless legs syndrome, and irritable bowel syndrome.
